In 1968, Thelma entered kindergarten in Montebello speaking no English but had an eagerness to learn, according to her teacher Mrs. Silverman. An eagerness, Thelma explains, shared by her mother and that came from being the eldest and knowing her grandmother in Chihuahua, Mexico was a teacher and a principal. In fact, Mrs. Silverman, too, was the product of eager parents who had high expectations, who did not speak English but provided the environment needed for her to succeed.
