It is with very mixed feelings that I share important transition news at LAEP. Jane Patterson, Senior Director Transform Schools was on loan to LAEP from LAUSD. She reached the end of her detached service in June and has transitioned to a new part-time co-Director position with the excellent arts organization from New York, Exploring the Arts. This new opportunity builds upon Jane’s expertise and years of experience integrating arts into core instruction. The balance of her time will be with LAUSD.
Jane’s visionary leadership and sense of justice propelled Humanitas and LAEP into the forefront of the movement for teacher-led pilot schools and teacher-led school transformation. Her passion for students and teachers has resulted in schools that enrich the arts and educational experience for students, serve their health and well-being and support the professionalism of teachers. Her impact on school reform in Los Angeles has been profound.
At the same time, I am very pleased to share the great news that Lara Kain will be joining LAEP as the new Senior Director, Transform Schools! Lara has many years of experience, as a student and as a teacher/administrator of small alternative high schools with similar values and practices as Humanitas and community schools which is one of the reasons she was drawn to LAEP. For the past four years, she has put her teaching experience to work in school reform at the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, providing expert leadership and technical support for low achieving schools and districts including Title 1 and School Improvement Grants (SIG). In addition to coordinating state services for educating homeless youth, she brings direct experience teaching youth disengaged from school and learning. Lara also has extensive program and grant management experience including working at the University of Wisconsin, Center for Humanities.
Lara will bring to LAEP her deep passion for the success of all students and professional respect for teachers. LAEP’s model of grass roots, teacher-led school transformation resonates for her as the right approach, and she has worked with many models and national vendors. Lara learned about LAEP because she administers the Fund for Teachers Teacher Fellowship program in Wisconsin, which LAEP runs in LA. Representatives from across Transform Schools and the LAEP Board of Directors participated in this national search and selection process. Lara will officially join LAEP starting July 25. But, she will return to Wisconsin to gather her family and bring them out to Los Angeles for the balance of the summer. She will be in the office full-time on September 9 and she will work remotely part-time until then.
Effective July 25, Lara can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org.
