Updated 5:00 p.m. PDT LAEP Staff to Discuss School Readiness at 2000 PEN Conference Staff members from the Los Angeles Educational Partnership's Family Care initiative will present a workshop on school readiness at the Public Education Network's 2000 Annual Conference. LAEP's Amy Rice, Josefina Sapriza and Nancy Villarreal, will speak about "Academic Readiness: Addressing the Developmental Needs of Children." The address will examine the ever-increasing role of schools in linking students and their families to service providers to meet basic needs. "Too many children come to school unprepared to learn," Rice said. "One of the ways to overcome this through a partnership with parents and the community." Family Care is doing just that in some of Los Angeles' poorest neighborhoods through its School Readiness Project. The Project focuses on parents being the first educational role models for their child before they even begin school. Paraprofessionals work with families for six months to improve parenting skills that extend beyond the ordinary interactions between parent and child. In addition, LAEP staff members will discuss how preschool and elementary school staff can open a dialogue in understanding each other's programs and align standards. Actually three conferences in one, the three-day conference November 12, 13 and 14 in Washington DC will provide interactive sessions and dynamic keynote presentations with thought-provoking, nationally recognized experts. Each day's sessions are designed around a theme that provides attendees with easy ways to enter the dialogue. This year's conference will focus on curriculum and instrruction. The Public Education Network (PEN) is the nation's largest network of independent, community-based school reform organizations. Through 53 members in 27 states and the District of Columbia, PEN impacts more than 5.9 million children-representing 13 percent of all children attending public school in America-in nearly 300 school districts and 8,200 individual schools.
