LAEP to Examine Status of Teaching
in Los Angeles

The Los Angeles Educational Partnership announced this week that it has launched a new effort that will examine the status and quality of teaching in Los Angeles.

The Quality Teaching Initiative-Linking Research to Policy and Practice, will look closely at the status of teaching in the Los Angeles area from recruitment to supporting teachers throughout their careers. During the next two years, the initiative will engage educators and community members in research on issues related to teaching quality, inform the community of key findings and develop policy recommendations that support high-quality teaching.

"Teachers are the most basic educational resource that we provide our children," said LAEP Vice President Dr. Judy Johnson. "The Quality Teaching Initiative will provide one of the most comprehensive analyses of the teaching profession in Los Angeles and how teacher quality affects student achievement."

Among the goals The Quality Teaching Initiative hopes to accomplish are to conduct an inventory of the status of teaching, engage educators in identifying policies that require local, state, and national attention and develop and disseminate reports on key research issues and findings. The Initiative is supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education Office of Educational Research and Improvement (OERI) in collaboration with the Public Education Network (PEN). PEN and OERI are supporting similar initiatives in seven additional sites throughout the country.

LAEP will work in collaboration with other education reform organizations, teachers, universities, and business and community organizations in this effort.
