LAEP to Provide Tech Training to LAUSD Teaching Credential Candidates

Beginning this Saturday, 30 novice teachers and 15 teacher mentors involved in the Los Angeles Educational Partnership's Professional Development School, will learn effective ways to integrate technology into their curriculum as well as explore the policy issues surrounding technology in education.

The workshop series will provide technology training and support for new teachers who have emergency teaching permits and are working toward their teaching credential while working in inner-city classrooms. "Technology for Tomorrow's Teachers (TeaTech)" is designed to strengthen teachers' computer skills for classroom management and curriculum building, their understanding of policy issues related to technology in education and to improve upon their leadership skills. The TeaTech program was made possible by a $1.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

They will also learn to use the Internet to facilitate discussions and exchange ideas with other teachers, specialists and experts in their disciplines on how to implement lessons in the classroom and how to vary lessons found online.

LAEP's Professional Development School (PDS) supports new teachers who have emergency teaching permits and are working toward their teaching credential while working in inner-city classrooms. The Workshop series provides a key source of support for teacher development. The PDS is a collaborative project of LAEP, California State University Dominguez Hills, the Manual Arts Cluster, and the Los Angeles Unified School District.

TeaTech will operate across six school campuses in the Manual Arts Cluster in south central Los Angeles in conjunction with PDS activities. Training will be provided to PDS faculty, staff and new teachers participating in the program. Technology coordinators will provide follow-up support for PDS students as they learn to use the Internet and other technologies to meet the needs of their students.
