Parent Knowledge of Standardized Tests Limited, Survey Finds

A national research survey found that parents' knowledge and understanding of standardized testing and state-mandated assessments is limited and that many parents are confused about the tests, what they mean, and what is measured by their state's educational assessments.

The survey, conducted by Harris Interactive and sponsored by Sylvan Learning Center and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) queried 600 parents via the Internet about their knowledge and understanding of standardized testing and state-mandated assessments.

Key findings of the survey found that, overall, parents do not feel informed about standardized assessment tests nor equipped to help their children prepare for them. Furthermore, a majority do not believe mandated state testing is a true or valid measurement of what their children have learned.
