Romer Sets Top Priorities
for LAUSD

Former Colorado Gov. Roy Romer, soon to be the superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District, said his top priorities when he takes over in July will include shrinking the district bureaucracy, relieving overcrowding and calming the clamor for breaking up the district. He is also emphasizing accessibility as he begins crafting a plan for the schools.

On June 9, less than week after being named to his new post, Romer sat down with Los Angeles Times reporters Louis Sahagun and Doug Smith to discuss his thoughts about his new job running the nation's second largest school district.

Also, while still chairman of the Democratic National Committee, Romer outlined what he called his 12-Step Program to True Reform for the nation's schools in which he stated there is "no issue that is as important to this nation's future as that of improving the quality of education."
