LAUSD Reveals Reorganization Plan

LOS ANGELES UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT Interim Superintendent Ramon C. Cortines has unveiled his plan to reorganize the District's Central Office. The plan calls for the elimination of as many as half of the 2,000 administrative and support staff positions in the massive school district with most administrators and staffers sent back to the schools.

Under the proposal detailed in a report titled "Eleven Local Districts, One Mission: A Multiple District Plan for Transforming the LAUSD," 11 largely autonomous districts would be created, with a local superintendent in each reporting directly to a general superintendent of schools. Many of the functions currently provided by the central office would be transferred to the Local Districts. If approved, the reorganization would be implemented on July 1, 2000.

Get a summary of the plan in this LA Times article or download the full report via the LAUSD Web site.
