California Primary 2000: Focus on Education
On Tuesday, March 7, California voters will go to the polls to choose who will represent their parties in the November 2000 general election. According to recent polls, education is the top concern among voters this election season, ranking above health care, Social Security and tax cuts. With education on everyone's minds, the four presidential front runners, Bill Bradley, George W. Bush, Al Gore, and John McCain, each have a plan to improve education.
To learn more about Proposition 26 and the views of the presidential candidates, start with the online version of the California Secretary of State Voter information Guide (http://vote2000.ss.ca.gov/VoterGuide/), which provides a sample version of the state ballot, as well as candidate and ballot measure statements.
Non-partisan information is available from the League of Women Voters (http://ca.lwv.org). You might also want to check out the Democracy Network (http://www.vdnet.org) which provides position statements from the candidates, pro and con arguments on the ballot measurements and a candidates issues grid. Real political junkies should check out the California Voter Foundation (www.calvoter.org/home.html) which provides 300-plus pages of voter information on the statewide races and ballot measures. For a more in-depth look at educational issues on the ballot check out EDSource´s election report on Proposition 26 at http://www.edsource.org.
